Howard Da Silva (1909-86) born Howard Silverblatt in Cleveland, Ohio, was the son of Yiddish-speaking Jews born in Russia. He had a job as a steelworker before beginning his acting career on the stage. Da Silva appeared in a number of Broadway musicals, including the legendary first production of Marc Blitzstein's musical, "The Cradle Will Rock" (1937). In 1943 he co-starred in the original stage production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!," playing the role of the psychopathic Jud Fry. Da Silva appeared in over 60 motion pictures, including such noir-cursions as THE LOST WEEKEND (1945), THE BLUE DAHLIA (1946) and THEY LIVE BY NIGHT (1949). In 1969 he originated the role of Benjamin Franklin in the musical 1776 and played him in the 1972 film version as well.

This guy was a stinking Commie. He should have been shipped to his beloved Russia.
Thank you for this post on Mr. de Silva, as he was a marvelous actor and when I see his name in a film's credits, I know I will be seeing something extra. He is the definitive Ben Franklin in 1776, and he totally "inhabits" every role I've ever seen him in. I just watched him again as the jittery, explosive Chickamaw in "They Live By Night". Zowie.
Some people will make disparaging remarks with no background whatsoever. This man was a credit to his craft.
